Cold weather shoes - let’s talk about them. There are A LOT of options when it comes to keeping your feet warm during the winter. In this article, we’ve compiled a list of shoes that can withstand a wet and cold winter, and keep you warm in harsh conditions.
First, we have our Gore-Tex options from Brooks. If you’re not familiar with Brooks, they’re one of the leading brands in the running shoe world. They have a wide selection of neutral and stability shoes, track and cross country spikes, and they’re currently expanding their collection of performance footwear. Now, not every shoe of theirs comes in a Gore-Tex (GTX) version, but the two shoes mentioned here are some of our staff’s favorites.
Two of our GTX options: the Adrenaline GTS 23 GTX, an the Divide 5 GTX. Both of these shoes sport a Gore-Tex lining that will keep you nice and dry duing some wintery, wet runs. If you typically run in a stability shoe, you’d want to check out the Adrenaline first, as it has the signature Brooks Guiderail system to help stablize you during your run. This is also one of Brooks most popular shoes, and it tends to work well for a lot of people. If you have a more neutral gait, you should check out the Divide 5 GTX. The Divide 5 GTX is also considered to be a “hybrid” road/trail shoe, so it is able to handle a variety of terrains, and is a great shoe for beginner trail runners that are still doing some road runs as well.
Next up, we have a few Gore-Tex options from Hoka; the Clifton 9 GTX, and the Speedgoat 6 GTX. Hoka is a newer brand (at least compared to how long some of the other brands have been around) and they are making waves in the running world with their unique designs and high cushioned options. Hoka is known for having a bit of a softer foam, so if you’re looking for a bit more cushion underfoot, these shoes might be worth trying out. However, one thing to note is that the Speedgoat 6 has been made a little firmer than it’s previous version. The Speedgoat 6 GTX is another shoe that can work well for beginner trail runners, though it is considered more of a trail-specific shoe. Trail shoes tend to have thicker tread and lugs on the bottom that add extra traction, but they can wear down quickly if you’re running mostly on paved surfaces. It’s just another factor to consider when looking at purchasing a pair of cold weather/trail shoes.
Hoka has also created a Gore-Tex version of one of their most popular shoes, the Clifton 9. This is a neutral daily trainer that can take the miles, or be comfortable enough for daily wear. With a Gore-Tex lining, this shoe can take you wherever you need to go, in any weather. A little rain won’t be able to hold you back from getting outside and putting in some miles!
There are many, many more options when it comes to cold weather and trail shoes, but we think these shoes are a great place to start if you’ve never had a pair of Gore-Tex shoes.
